Bookshops around the world opened at midnight on the release dates so readers could get their copy of Lee’s new novel, which comes fifty years after the publication of the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. In the run up to launch night, the novel had already smashed pre-order records internationally and looks set to top the book charts.

Go Set a Watchman was written five years before the Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird. Set in Maycomb, Alabama, the novel addresses themes of racism, civil rights tensions and political turmoil. It sees the return of Jean Louise Finch (Scout), her ageing father, Atticus, and many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird.
