Review: Peony Jade Mooncakes

TIME FOR A CUPPA TEA AND A SLICE OF MOONCAKE

The month of August often presents us with a conundrum – so many mooncake choices, so little time to eat all of them! Fret no more, we have narrowed down the multitude of choices to the best one – the Peony Jade mooncakes.

Almost all of Peony Jade’s mooncakes are made by hand, daily, using premium, natural ingredients. To make sure that you get the best out of the taste and texture of the Peony Jade mooncakes, the Peony Jade staffs were very passionate about reminding their buyers the proper way to store and consume their mooncakes.

The Flaky Teochew Orh-Ni Mooncakes are best consumed after placing them in a pre-heated oven (not microwave!) at 130°C for about 5 minutes before serving. Having done this, the Orh-Ni’s texture would be at its optimum viscosity and the aroma of the egg yolk nested within will emanate onto your palate as soon as you taste it.

I was never a fan of any mooncakes with egg yolks, until I have tasted these Peony Jade treasures. Now, I found myself picking out these small aromatic yolks from every mooncakes!

The Fruity Snowskin Mooncakes that have been frozen at -10°C, should be thawed within the fridge for about 20 minutes, before being eaten like an ice cream. Alternatively, if you can’t resist the temptation of such delectable snowskin mooncakes, you can thaw them quickly under room temperature for 15 minutes before eating them.

If you get this right, the texture and the taste of the Mao Shan Wang durian filling will colour your taste buds with its creamy aroma. Do bear in mind that real fruits, like apple, cempedak, kochi yuzu and soursop, are used to make the fillings of these mooncakes, so their textures and tastes are paramount.

This season, there is a Jack-in-a-box for the durian-flavoured snowskin mooncakes. Peony Jade has procured a rather rare Black Thorn Durian and filled it into the mini snowskin mooncakes. These are something out-of-this-world and only available in very limited amounts. Hint: Look out for a blue-tinged snowskin mooncake.

Given the smorgasbord of mooncake offerings this season, Peony Jade has done exceptionally well and you, surely, will not be disappointed.
