CELEBRATING TALENTS AND ABILITIES OF THOSE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES BY FORMING A GLOBAL VISION OF ACCEPTANCE
Happening once in each 4-years, this year (2015) sees Los Angeles, South California hosting the Special Olympics World Summer Games which will see around 7,000 athletes from all over the world taking part in games and competing in 25 Olympic-type Summer sports.
The Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 is happening from 21st July to 2nd August 2015 and is a chance for the world to unite though sports and celebrate the talents and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities by way of forming a new global vision of acceptance.
Singapore will be represented in 7 sport, namely; Athletics, Badminton, Bocce, Bowling, Football, Swimming and Table Tennis and, this is the first time Special Olympics Singapore is sending a female football team and 2 table tennis athletes to the World Summer Games.
The Special Olympics Singapore team consists of 33 athletes and 15 officials/coaches. As is the role of the Special Olympics, the Singapore team brings together people with and without intellectual disabilities, as teammates and competitors, on the filed of play. Special Olympics breaks down the walls of social exclusion, enabling all participants to gain a new appreciation for one another, dispel fear, misperceptions and low expectations, and pave the way for broader social inclusion in the community.
Special Olympics (SO) Singapore is a non-profit voluntary organisation formed in 1983 and is recognised by the Singapore Sports Council as a National Sports Association (NSA). Special Olympics Singapore provides year round sports training and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them continuous opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
SO Singapore relies heavily on volunteers for manpower and the generosity of private corporations and the public funds required to support the various training programs and competitions implemented for the benefit of athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 will take place in Los Angeles, South California. The opening ceremony will take place on 25th July at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games will see 177 countries taking part and Singapore will be sending a contingent of 43 members. The closing ceremony will take place on 2nd August 2015.
