Fans have been asking for months what the main event of UFC Fight Night 154 is, and for the longest period, no one understood. The event takes place June 22 in Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and also neighborhood boy Stephen”Wonderboy” Thompson unavailable to fight soon after the beating he took against Anthony Pettis in March, it was difficult to predict who would headline the card.
Now we know.
The UFC declared this week that the primary event of UFC Fight Night 154 will be an exciting five-round featherweight struggle between”The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung and Renato Moicano. These are two of the best featherweights in the world, which battle should be a lot of fun. It might not be a title battle, but you’d be hard-pressed to view some fans whine about this struggle Jung (14-5) is coming off of a last-second KO loss to Yair Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night 139 in one of the most significant MMA fights of all time. Jung was well on his way to winning the bout until he got caught with an unorthodox upward elbow by Rodriguez in the 4:59 mark of the fifth round and suffered a shocking weight loss loss. His UFC record dropped but the fact he has won six bonuses in six UFC battles says everything about Jung. Lose or win, Jung is one. It’ll be difficult to recuperate from such a brutal KO after such a warfare of a fight, but after taking over six weeks off to cure, hopefully he’s 100 percent healthy and good to go for this battle. The loss to Rodriguez knocked him from the featherweight title picture for now, but if he could beat Moicano, he’ll jump right back in the mix.
Moicano (13-2-1) is coming off of a brutal KO loss, this one to Jose Aldo back in UFC Fight Night 144. Like Jung, Moicano was winning the fight until Aldo turned the clock back and unleashed a violent flurry of strikes that knocked Moicano out. He’s 5-2 at the UFC and one of the best featherweights in the world. Besides declines to Aldo and Brian Ortega — there is no shame to shedding to either of these men — Moicano has been one of the best featherweights from the UFC differently. Like Jung, he needs to rebound from his last reduction to be able to rejoin the featherweight title mix, but there is no reason to thing that he can’t do it.
The chances for this fight should be interesting if they come out, but if I had to guess, Moicano will be slightly preferred. Bettors will likely be looking to fade Jung coming off of the lousy loss while Moicano is somebody who constantly gets a ton of respect from the betting public. Nonetheless, it’s definitely a close fight that could go either way, and MMA fans in Carolina should be excited that they landed such an exciting struggle as the main event of UFC Fight Night 154.
